Frostmaster Peas – Raw Seed (Lb)

Frostmasters are a white flowered pea. They are low in tannins which gives them a sweet taste and makes them highly palatable compared to other peas. They work for both fall and spring planting, have strong plant growth and are winter hardy. 

Frostmaster Winter Peas act and grow the same as the Austrian Winter peas. Frostmaster Peas may grow a little faster in the late winter, but it is only an incremental difference. The biggest difference is that Frostmaster Peas have a light green or tan seed coat and the Austrian peas have a dark brown seed coat. Frostmaster peas may be slightly larger as well, but would be planted at the same rate per area.

• Application Rate: 50-70 lb/acre, at 1/2-2 inches deep
• Inoculant: Pea-Vetch or Garden Combination inoculant (sold separately)
• Germination: 14-21 Days (depending on soil temperature)
• Plant Height: 2-3 feet (if supported)
• Uses: Good weed competitor, does well in heavy soils, and fixes up to 70-125 lbs. of nitrogen/acre, attracts beneficial insects to the growing area at the start of the season. Good protein source in forage mixtures.
• Facts to Note: In most areas, sow in early-mid fall on well-drained soil. Matures in April in warm areas (later than fall planted spring peas).

We would typically advise using Frostmaster winter peas in colder locations, and they can be planted as late as winter wheat would be. They are pretty cold  tolerant once they have a true leaf or 2 on them, just like winter wheat, which can take a lot of cold if it has some growth before freezing temperatures. (3”inches tall)

Get them established before it gets cold. If planted too late (i.e. December), winter peas will be slow growing and sluggish to get going in the spring.
